These photos were my attempt to create a story using just color, texture, and shape. I found it very hard to obtain the desired amount of color in each photo. I don’t think that any of the photos I shot look particularly high in saturation so they are probably not all that effective. I really have no idea how to make my photos look more colorful without doing it in post. It just seems like they are all kind of bland. I guess it probably has to do with the quality and direction of the light that I was using

These are photos that I shot that show harsh and soft shadows. I have realized how effective shadows can be in creating a specific mood. Generally, harsher shadows work well when trying to convey a dramatic feeling or intense situations. The use of softer shadows conveys more of a relaxed and soothing mood. Through this journal activity I realized that it can be very hard to obtain the desired effect using any ordinary light source. Without a focused light source it isn’t easy to create harsh shadows, and I found it particularly hard to arrange the objects I was shooting in a way that gave them the most dramatic effect.

Abstract Photography Journal #6

These are the photos that I took as abstraction. This type of photography is completely different that documentary or portraiture photography, because it doesn’t deliver a direct message. The subject is often hard to define because abstract photography delivers its message in a way that is up for interpretation. These photos often represent a feeling or idea rather than a specific objects. Im not sure what the applicable uses of abstract photography really are other than just for the sake of creating art. I suppose that it could be used subtly or as a background for sending a message in video or graphic design, but other than that, I am not really sure

Journal #5 Compositional Elements

These photos use some of the elements shown in the Renaissance paintings. Though these pictures are not quite as obvious in there technique(or as well done), their use of triangular composition, symmetry, and also asymmetrical composition make these photographs a little more interesting as they direct the eye from around the different sections of the photo

These pictures are all great examples of paintings done during the renaissance using compositional elements such as Linear, Circular, Triangular, A-symmetrical, and symmetrical. These paintings are very unlike photographs in the way that everything appears to be at a similar depth of field, but the way that they direct the eye can be one element that is very useful in photography

Journal #4

This Journal is to emphasize composition and the rule of thirds in a photograph. After looking at some Ansel Adams and Carvaggio pictures, I realized how compositionally sound their work is. The rule of thirds is a basic rule that I try to apply to almost everyone of my photos, but I realize that there is a lot I can do to make my images stronger. One thing that I do not think about a whole lot is the use of leading lines. I noticed, especially in the following picture by Carvaggio, how many different lines direct the eyes of the viewer around effectively.
The first images are great examples of good composition. The last ones, which are mine, are not that great but I tried. Hopefully I can learn to use the rule of thirds along with leading lines to make my photos a little more interesting, and a little more full of purpose.

This exercise helped me get a better grasp on how shutter speed works. Usually I like to try to keep objects as clear as possible, but experimenting with slower shutter speeds made me realize that there is more than one way to make something look good. It is also incredibly to cool to see how many effects can be produced with a slow shutter that can’t be seen with the naked eye. Colors at night are especially vibrant, and the use of a slow shutter has made night photography one of my favorite types of photography
